Happiness is contagious and spreads quickly between friends and family, say scientists. Happiness really does rub off on other people you know, according to one of the largest studies ever carried out. It shows happiness can spread through social groups and the closer you are to someone with a sunny disposition, the more likely you are to be happy as well.
This not only counts for partners and family, but when cheerful friends live closer it lifts your mood, say US researchers writing today in the British Medical Journal. Strangers can also benefit from the 'Pollyanna syndrome', it is claimed, so people who are surrounded by happy people are likely to become happy in the future. British experts claim the 'groundbreaking' study suggests people's health could also improve as a result as optimism is linked to a better immune system.
