How to tie a tie

Starting out, tying ties may seem like rocket science to you. You may begin with the Windsor Knot, one of the easiest tie knots to learn, before trying the Half Windsor Knot, the Four in Hand Knot and the Pratt Knot.

Seven Simple Rules for How to Take a Nap

Taking naps improve mood, creativity, memory function, heart health, and so much else. So let’s do it, people. Let’s fall asleep.

1. The first thing you should know is, feeling sleepy in the afternoon is normal.
It doesn’t mean you had a big lunch, or that you’re depressed, or you’re not getting enough exercise. That’s just how animals’ cycles work—every 24 hours, we have two periods of intense sleepiness. One is typically in the wee hours of the night, from about 2 a.m. to 4 a.m., and the other is around 10 hours later, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. If you’re a night owl and wake up later in the morning, that afternoon sleepiness may come later; if you’re an early bird, it may come earlier. But it happens to everyone; we’re physiologically hardwired to nap.

2. Naps provide different benefits depending on how long they are.
A short nap of even 20 minutes will enhance alertness and concentration, mood and coordination. A nap of 90 minutes will get you into slow wave and REM sleep, which enhances creativity. If you sleep deeply and uninterruptedly the whole time, you’ll go through a full-minute sleep cycle, and recoup sleep you might not have gotten the night before (we’ve all heard it a million times, but most of us don’t get enough sleep at night).

3. Try not to sleep longer than 45 minutes but less than 90 minutes.
Then you’ll wake up in the middle of a slow-wave cycle, and be groggy. I used to hate taking naps during the day for just this reason—I would always wake up in a fog. My problem was I hadn’t yet perfected the art of the 20 minute catnap.

4. Find a nice dark place where you can lie down.
It takes about 50 percent longer to fall asleep sitting up (this is why red eye flights usually live up to their name), and be armed with a blanket; you don’t want to be chilly. You also don’t want to be too warm, which can lead to oversleeping. (There was a kind of urban legend circulating when I was a kid: don’t fall asleep in the sun, or you’ll never wake up. Not true—but you might wake up three hours later with a ripe sunburn.)

5. White noise can help you fall asleep.
Especially during the day when construction crews, garbage trucks, barking dogs and other noisy awake-world things can conspire to destroy your nap. Keep a fan on, or turn on a nearby faucet for a pleasing rushing-river sound. (Just kidding about that last one.)

6. Don’t nap too close to bedtime.
If you do, you’ll find it difficult to fall asleep later. Remember, your inbuilt sleepy window is sometime in the early to mid-afternoon—try to nap then.

7. Quit your job.
Quit that silly job where they don’t let you take naps during the day.

So you want to try your IT guys' patience?

Technical support questions can sometimes try information technology professionals' patience. Here's a look at some of the oddest questions that IT executives reported receiving:

# "My computer is telling me to press any key to continue. Where is the 'any' key?"

# "Can you reset the Internet for me?"

# "Can you rearrange the keyboard alphabetically?"

# "My laptop was run over by a truck. What should I do?"

Some people wanted answers to make their lives a little less stressful. They asked:

# "How can I block e-mail from my manager?"

# "Can I open the bank safe using my computer?"

# "Can you install cable TV on my PC?"

# "I'd like to stop receiving e-mail on Fridays."

And some demanded entirely too much:

# "I'd like wireless computer access in my motor home."

# "How long does it take to bake a potato in a microwave?"

# "My daughter is locked in the bathroom. Can you pick the lock?"

# "Where can I get software to track UFOs?"

Lift could take passengers straight into space

Japanese scientists are attempting to build a lift that will take passengers 62,000 miles into space. The project could see the realisation of a vision that has inspired science fiction writers for generations.

The lift's carriages, which will themselves require new feats of engineering, would move up and down 22,000 mile-long cables. Those cables would need to be stronger and lighter than any material ever woven. They would be anchored to the ground and disappear into the sky, eventually reaching a satellite docking station orbiting above the Earth.

SMS while driving more dangerous than alcohol

A British study done by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) for the British Royal Automobile Club Foundation indicates it's more dangerous to send text messages while driving even when compared to drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Research carried out on young drivers (aged 17-24) using a simulator found that reaction time slowed by 35% when they were writing or reading text messages while driving. In comparison, reaction time deteriorated by 21% for those under the influence of cannabis, and by 12% at the legal alcohol limit.

Brits spend 14 years of life watching TV

Britons will spend 14 years of their life in front of the TV and don't care that much what they are watching, according to a survey on Friday. Research for Virgin Media found that 29 percent of Brits spend 20 hours a week watching TV with 71 percent saying they find themselves viewing programmes for the sake of it.

The survey also concluded that 13 percent of people could not bear to miss their favourite show. In total, that means spending 14 years watching TV based on an average lifetime of 78 years. And if people aren't watching the box then they are talking about it.

HP to cut nearly 25,000 jobs by 2011

Computer maker Hewlett-Packard said it will lay off 24,600 employees, or 7.5% of its workforce, over the next three years in a plan to integrate tech outsourcer Electronic Data Systems, which HP bought late last month.

HP said the workforce reduction will result in annual cost savings of about $1.8 billion. Of the nearly 25,000 layoffs, HP said about half will come from workers in the United States.

World's smallest SLR camera

Japan's Matsushita said it would launch the world's smallest digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, targeting female users who want a high-performance machine that does not weigh too much. SLR cameras, high-end models with interchangeable lenses, are the fastest growing and most lucrative segment of the digital camera market. But some compact camera users are reluctant to move up to SLR models because they are bulkier and heavier.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd, which changes its name to Panasonic on October 1, offers the Lumix brand digital cameras. Its new Lumix model, DMC-G1, is 27 percent smaller than its existing DMC-L10 SLR camera, and weighs 385 grams -- slightly more than a regular can of beer.

The new machine will go on sale in Japan on October 31. Matsushita it expected a package of the camera body and a lens unit to sell for 90,000 yen ($839.5).

Welcome to my party - now pay up!

Think twice before accepting an invitation to a party. That's the lesson Tonya Bowman, 39, learned recently after a birthday bash for a newfound acquaintance at a pricey sushi restaurant. While Bowman ordered economically -- rice, miso soup and tea -- everyone else acted as if money were no object.

"When the bill came," Bowman says, the birthday girl "smiled and made a big production by way of a toast, saying, 'Thank you all so much for my lovely birthday dinner. I really do appreciate it. You guys are great. Here's to you!' Then she just sat there, waiting for us to decide how to split the bill."

The bill for the birthday girl and her seven "guests" came to a whopping $3,450, which someone suggested splitting evenly. That worked out to $500 per person, plus tip.
