Milk in tea 'blocks health gains'

Adding milk to a cup of tea can destroy its ability to protect against heart disease, according to research.

A small German study found drinking black tea significantly improved the ability of arteries to relax and expand to keep blood pressure healthy.

But the European Heart Journal paper also found proteins in milk, called caseins, blocked this effect.

Instant noodle inventor dies at 96

Momofuku Ando, the founder-chairman of Nissin Food Products Co, who was widely known as the inventor of instant noodles, died of a heart failure this evening at a hospital in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, his family said. He was 96.

Born on March 5, 1910 in Taiwan, Ando initially ran clothing companies in Taipei and Osaka while he was a student at Ritsumeikan University. In 1948, he founded the precursor of Nissin, before introducing Chicken Ramen, the world's first instant noodle product, in 1958.

Coffee with a "drop" of milk

It took a LOT of images and about 5 hours of drip, drip, dripping milk into coffee with a pipette to get this one but it’s been worth it in the end. For the lighting I used a Nikon SB 800 on one side of the coffee and a Metz slave flash on the other. The biggest problem I had (apart from getting the splash in the first place) was getting the coffee colour bright enough without blowing the white of the milk. --IreneM

A Bank With A Life Of Its Own

Here’s a piggy bank with a twist: The Bank of Life has an LCD on the front displaying a little tiny digital person whose quality of life depends on how much money you’ve saved. At first, he’s living out of a shoebox without a cent to his name. As you add money to the bank, he upgrades to better and better housing. When the bank’s full, he’s living in a luxury apartment! If that doesn’t get across the value of saving money, what can?

Sadly, the bank is designed to accept only Japanese 500-yen coins, and is only available in Japan right now, at a price of about $40 USD.

BitTyrant: A selfish BitTorrent client that improves performance

BitTyrant is a new, protocol compatible BitTorrent client that is optimized for fast download performance. BitTyrant is...

Fast – During evaluation testing on more than 100 real BitTorrent swarms, BitTyrant provided an average 70% download performance increase when compared to the existing Azureus 2.5 implementation, with some downloads finishing more than three times as quickly.

Fair – BitTorrent was designed with incentives in mind: if a user is downloading at 30 KBps, they should upload at 30 KBps. However, due to the unique workload properties of many real-world swarms, this is not always enforced. BitTyrant is designed to make efficient use of your scarce upload bandwidth, rewarding those users whose upload allocations are fair and only allocating excess capacity to other users.

Familiar – BitTyrant is based on modifications to Azureus 2.5, currently the most popular BitTorrent client. All of our changes are under the hood. You’ll find the GUI identical to Azureus, with optional additions to display statistics relevant to BitTyrant’s operation.

Snakes can predict earthquakes

Chinese experts believe snakes could sense earthquakes from 120 km, or 70 miles, three to five days before it occurs.

According to the China Daily Newspaper, the earthquake bureau in Nanning, Guangxi’s capital, developed a system combining natural instinct and modern technology. Bureau experts run a 24-hour video feed to monitor snakes at snakes farms in their localities.

Jiang Weisong, bureau director said snakes are the most sensitive animals on earth when it comes to earthquakes.

When quakes are about to happen, snakes will come out of their nests even during winter. If it is a big one, they will bang walls in order to go escape, he said.

China is often struck by earthquakes. After what happened to Taiwan on Tuesday, Chinese experts believe that with the help of snakes, they will be able to prevent any untoward mishaps brought about by quakes.

Taiwan telecom won't build additional backup

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan's largest telecom company said Friday it will not invest more in backup lines to protect against disasters like the recent earthquake that snarled telephone and Internet service across Asia, affecting service as far away as the United States.

The quake, which damaged undersea cables off Taiwan on Tuesday, was so rare that there is no need to spend money on extra lines, said Wu Chih-ming, a senior official at Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest telecommunications company.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau measured the quake at magnitude 6.7 while the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 7.1.

"We won't consider laying more backup cables for now because such an incident might not happen in another 100 years," Wu said.

Taiwan Quakes Disrupt My Internet

Two quakes measuring 6.7 and 7.1 on the Richter scale on Tuesday that struck off the coast of Taiwan damaged undersea cables carrying Internet traffic, causing slowdowns in Internet access throughout the Asian continent and wreaking havoc on the financial markets. Damage was bringing down data transfer by as much as half in some cases, and it could take weeks before service is fully restored.

Undersea cables that carry both voice and data run throughout the Pacific, many of which are routed through Taiwan. As of early morning Wednesday, only about 10 percent of international calls were completed. The worst of the disruptions seemed to be in Taiwan itself, where only half of the normal telecommunications capacity was available after two out of the four lines were cut.

Why most Watch Ads show the time as 10:08?

10:08, 8 minutes past 10, is roughly the time analog watches are set to in most advertisements, though actual times shown vary between about 10:08 and 10:10. There are several reasons offered by watch companies, many of them psychological, and none of them verifiable as the actual origin of the practice:
  • The form of the hands has a positive effect on the viewer: the short hand pointing at 10 o'clock and the long hand pointing at 8 minutes is reminiscent of a check mark, which commonly means "ok" or "fine." Some observers further identify this appearance with a smiling face.

  • The position of the hands does not obscure the date on watches with a date-function at 3 o'clock or any other functions at 9 or 3 o'clock.

  • The position of the hands does not obscure the company logo, which is often printed under 12 o'clock.

  • The hands are nearly symmetrically balanced on the face of the dial at 10:08. The minute hand is 48° right of vertical, while the hour hand is 56° left of vertical. Exact symmetry would be achieved at 120/13 minutes past 10:00, approximately 10:09:13.8. Other symmetrical times would not meet the needs above.

  • At 10 o'clock in the morning, the day is young. There is still time to accomplish many things.

  • 10 o'clock is the time at which people typically wake up if they are able to sleep in. 10:08 is thus associated with weekend, leisure and relaxation.
Oddly enough, 10:08 is also the time at which a 12-hour digital display will have the maximum number of digit "segments" turned on. However, digital watches in commercials are more often set to 10:58.

Not all watch companies use this type of setting in their ads, though the majority do.
