Make Your Work Day Shorter

If Your Work Day Seems to Drag By, It's Probably a Sign That You're Unsatisfied.

Here's how to make your work day shorter:
  • Have a candid conversation with your boss about taking on more challenging assignments that inspire you to work harder.

  • Spend time with colleagues who love their jobs rather than the ones who complain constantly. Enthusiasm is contagious, but so is negativity.

  • Take your lunch break. Lots of times we feel like we are too busy to step away from the desk, but taking time for lunch will both break up the day and recharge you when you get back to work.

  • Create to-do lists with firm timetables for getting work done. Once you start checking tasks off the list, it will inspire you to accomplish more.

  • Get a snack that offers an energy boost when your blood sugar is low — think nuts and power bars. Maybe you're actually just tired, not bored.

  • Come up with clear goals. It's hard to work toward a goal if you don't have one, or if the end goal is a fuzzy intangible that constantly changes.

  • Grab a cup of coffee with a colleague you've always wanted to learn more about. The more peers you get along with, the more fun going to work will be.

  • Be proactive. Challenging, fulfilling assignments don't just fall from the sky.
  • Think of projects that you are passionate about and suggest them to your supervisor.

  • If all else fails, look for a new job. If your job is totally wrong for you, you'll never be happy.

Protecting Yourself At Hot Spots

Every time you connect at a hotspot, you're asking for trouble. Hotspots are open networks that don't use encryption, which invites hacking and snooping. In addition, when you're on a hotspot you're connected to the same network as your fellow hotspot users, they can potentially weasel their way onto your PC and inflict damage.

But don't let that deter you from connecting. There's plenty you can do to keep yourself safe at hotspots. Just follow these ten tips.

1. Disable Wi-Fi ad-hoc mode
2. Use a wireless Virtual Private Network (VPN).
3. Use an encrypted USB flash drive.
4. Use a personal firewall.
5. Turn off file sharing.
6. Make sure the hotspot is a legitimate one.
7. Disable or remove your wireless adapter if you're working offline.
8. Use email encryption.
9. Look over your shoulder.
10. Don't leave your laptop alone.

Tea 'healthier' drink than water

Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers.

Public health nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton said: "Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it."

JavaScript syntax checker

With JavaScript Lint, you can check all your JavaScript source code for common mistakes without actually running the script or opening the web page.

Here are some common mistakes that JavaScript Lint looks for:
  • Missing semicolons at the end of a line.

  • Curly braces without an if, for, while, etc.

  • Code that is never run because of a return, throw, continue, or break.

  • Case statements in a switch that do not have a break statement.

  • Leading and trailing decimal points on a number.

  • A leading zero that turns a number into octal (base 8).

  • Comments within comments.

  • Ambiguity whether two adjacent lines are part of the same statement.

  • Statements that don't do anything.
JavaScript Lint also looks for the following less common mistakes:
  • Regular expressions that are not preceded by a left parenthesis, assignment, colon, or comma.

  • Statements that are separated by commas instead of semicolons.

  • Use of increment (++) and decrement (--) except for simple statements such as "i++;" or "--i;".

  • Use of the void type.

  • Successive plus (e.g. x+++y) or minus (e.g. x---y) signs.

  • Use of labeled for and while loops.

  • if, for, while, etc. without curly braces. (This check is disabled by default.)

BMW Kids' Bike

BMW launched another new model this week, a freshened version of its Kids' Bike. Targeted at the 2 1/2 to 6 year-old BMW demographic, the bike has easily removable pedals so that kids learning to ride can keep their feet on the ground and use it as a push-bike. Once the child is comfortable with balancing and stopping the baby beemer, mom or dad can add the pedals. The blue and grey two-wheeler is certainly priced like a BMW - at $300.
